New role will develop LRSN's frontline services

Lincolnshire Rural Support Network, LRSN, is recruiting a new member of staff this spring.

Following extensive research and consideration by LRSN’s Board of Trustees, a full-time Health and Wellbeing Lead is being sought to augment the charity’s ability to help farming and rural families in Lincolnshire.

LRSN’s Board chairman, Meryl Ward explained: “As we mark our twentieth year, LRSN’s role in helping the county’s farming families through tough times has never been more necessary. Over the past few years, we have seen a marked increase in our casework, particularly those who need support and help with mental health issues.

“Our staff and volunteers do a magnificent job to provide the wide range of assistance, advice and healthcare that we offer, but we have seen a gap in our provision of support for people suffering mental health issues.  We are therefore looking for someone who will help us develop our services in the next stage of LRSN’s journey.

“Ideally our new staff member will have qualifications and experience in mental health care and be confident to take our health services forward, liaising with the NHS, social care and voluntary organisations to ensure the best care for our clients. The new post will include managing a staff and volunteer team dealing with a busy casework load. Last year we helped 140 farming families and we expect that number to increase this year and in future.

“The problems we help with range from financial issues to legal and health problems and relationship issues. For farming families, it is difficult to separate the business from family issues as they are intertwined and often one affects the other resulting in stress, anxiety and family disputes. The increase in the numbers of cases of stress and mental health problems has shown us that we must strengthen our capabilities in this area for both our current and future clients.”

LRSN operates a free and confidential helpline, manned by volunteers and available between 8am and 6pm, every day of the year. Health screening and a “drop-in” service are offered weekly, or fortnightly, at three market sites: at Newark and Louth livestock markets and at Spalding horticultural auction. Our nurses provide an excellent and accessible service – no appointments are necessary – offering blood pressure, blood cholesterol and blood sugar tests, a chance to chat about health issues or any worries that they may have.
